Malawi faces significant challenges in defeating poverty and achieving sustainable development, partly due to the widespread lack of capable and educated citizens. 85% of students do not complete senior secondary education, and less than 1% of college-level young people enrol at a university (UNICEF Malawi Factsheet, 2022). The poor are more likely to drop out. Lack of school fees is the main reason—43% of children from richer backgrounds complete senior secondary education, while less than 2% of children from the poorest backgrounds do so.
UMODZI realises that education is a socioeconomic enabler. This initiative tries to close the gap between the rich and the poor by ensuring equal access to educational opportunities. According to World Bank Data, more than two-thirds of the population lives in extreme poverty. Young people are particularly vulnerable as Malawi is a youthful country with 80% of its population below 35 years old, registering a median age of 17. Young people are treasured assets in Malawi. However, without intentionally supporting their personal and professional growth, they are poised to be a liability, and quality education is key. Unfortunately, most of the Malawian youths cannot afford school fees.
This program supports underprivileged secondary school students in Malawi, giving them the tools to build a brighter future for themselves, their communities, and the nation. Depending on the availability of scarce resources, at least two university students will also be supported.

Scholarship Support
Covers tuition fees, uniforms and other essential school supplies
Targets economically disadvantaged students regardless of gender or immigration status in Malawi, eligible youths with a refugee background will also be considered
Mentorship and Life Skills Training by UMODZI or UMODZI-identified team
Provides guidance and mentorship to help beneficiaries develop leadership, problem-solving, and entrepreneurial skills.
Mentor beneficiaries to become advocates for sustainable change in their communities
Community Engagement and Partnerships
Involve local communities in identifying deserving beneficiaries and ensuring accountability.
Build partnerships with schools and local organisations to ensure collaborative efforts
Sustainability and Long-term Impact
Encourages scholarship recipients to “pay it forward” by mentoring younger students or contributing to community development projects like tree planting exercises and volunteering
