Historic Milestone for Malawians in Germany!
Umodzi wa a Malawi in Germany (UMG), the first Malawian diaspora association dedicated to fostering Malawi-Germany relations, was officially registered on Friday, March 26, 2021, marking a significant step for the Malawian community in Germany. This achievement was announced by the founding chairperson, Alexander Kambili Jr., following the association’s attainment of “e.V.” status, the legal designation for a registered voluntary association in Germany.

A Journey of Dedication and Growth
“We are very excited that we have finally fulfilled all the required conditions. It has been a long learning process,” said Kambili. “The registration makes it easier for us to implement our programs and network with other like-minded associations.”
The journey to establish UMG began in July 2019 when Malawians met at the Malawian Embassy in Berlin. Together, they envisioned a registered diaspora group to connect Malawians living in Germany while promoting cultural and developmental ties between the two nations.

Membership
Membership in UMG is open to individuals of Malawian origin, including Malawian citizens, descendants of Malawian ancestry (by birth or adoption), spouses with Malawian roots, and legal entities promoting German and Malawian developmental interests. Those who meet these criteria and live or work in Germany are welcome to join.

Meet the Founding Committee
The association is led by a dedicated team of Malawian professionals:

Chairperson: Alexander Kambili Jr.
Vice Chairperson: Racheal Hoepfner-Gausi
General Secretary: Atupele Theresa Dimba
Treasurer: Malumbo Chipofya
Committee Members: Lusibilo Mwakaswaya Wiegert and Manasseh Chisiza

UMG aims to strengthen ties among Malawians living in Germany and between Malawi and Germany, providing a platform for cultural exchange, community support, and collaborative development efforts.
